A number of genetic factors have been linked to the development of diabetes, a condition that often requires implantable devices such as glucose sensors. In normoglycaemic individuals, this procedure induces a foreign body reaction (FBR) that is detrimental to bioimplant functionality. However, the influence of the genetic background on this reaction in diabetes has not been investigated.
