At the time of European contact, Pacific Northwest Coast aboriginal peoples had already formed such distinct art and sculpture styles that they were soon recognizable all over the world. North and Mid Coast house fronts, boxes, chests, canoes, paddles, dance screens, masks, helmets, hats, drums, rattles, ceremonial regalia, seats, coppers and clothing were painted.
