When you reach each mini goal reward yourself, make the rewards meaningful, not bad. Check off each goal a person reach which it. Rewards do not have to cost money, maybe drawing a smiley face on your calendar, or getting together with some mates for a card game or hike. Teach kid to identify birthdays with presence not presents. Children under age of five don't care whether or not they get twelve birthday gifts when one particular present card game with rewards they do receive getting the market . love them gathered around to fuss and fawn over items.
