Ira and his younger brother George spent many after-school hours on the Settlement. In order not to appear to commerce off George's growing reputation, Ira wrote beneath the pseudonym "Arthur Francis", after his youngest two siblings. He later wrote comedian lyrics for Billy Wilder's 1964 movie Kiss Me, Silly, although most critics imagine his last major work was for the 1954 Judy Garland movie A Star Is Born.
