Veterans in Entertainment: Stan Lee enlisted in the Army after hearing of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the Signal Corps. His duties included repairing telegraph wires and communications. Once the Army became aware of his writing ability, he was transferred to Training Film Division where he was given the military classification “Playwright”. He was one of only nine men given that classification.
When World War II ended, Lee returned to Timely Comics, where he’d held a job as an editor before enlisting. The company eventually became known as Marvel Comics and Lee gained fame as the co-creator of Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Thor, X-Men, and Doctor Strange.
In 2017, service members from Joint Base Lewis-McChord inducted Lee into the Signal Corps Regimental Association and gave him honorary membership in the 2nd Battalion 3rd Infantry Regiment.
