Badminton Ahn Se-young reaches Japan Masters semifinals...Seo Seung-jae, Chae Yu-jung also reach quarterfinals


World No. 1 badminton women's singles player Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) has reached the quarterfinals of the Japan Masters Badminton Championships 2023.

Ahn defeated world No. 15 Supanida Katetong (Thailand) 2-0 (21-17 21-9) in the women's singles quarterfinals on Sunday in Kumamoto, Japan.

She lost to Supanida in their first meeting in Mongolia in 2019, but has won all three of their previous meetings.

Trailing 7-11, Ahn scored four consecutive points after the mid-game break to level the match. The teams then exchanged points to tie the score at 16-16.

Later in the game, Ahn's offense took the upper hand. At 18-17, she scored three consecutive points to close out game one.

With her senses awakened, Ahn overwhelmed her opponent in game two.

She jumped out to an 8-0 lead and kept the momentum going to take a 14-5 lead. She never allowed her opponent to catch up and cruised to victory.

Ahn will play the winner of the World No. 3 Chen Yufei (CHN)-World No. 5 Carolina Marin (ESP) quarterfinal in the semifinals.

In the Mixed Doubles, World No. 4 Seo Seung Jae (Samsung Life Insurance)-Chae Yoo Jung (Incheon International Airport) advanced to the semifinals after defeating World No. 6 Zhang Zhenbang-Wei Ya Xin (China) in the quarterfinals with a game score of 2-0 (21-19 21-19).

In the semifinals, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung will face World No. 1 Zheng Tse-wei and Huang Ya-chung (CHN) for a spot in the final.
