When the first swallows return in spring, they often swoop down into open fields and other habitat near water to claim a nest site. They then start building their simple nests, and in a few weeks they will lay eggs. Sadly, this isn’t always enough to prevent starvation of both adults and young, especially if there are more returning swallows than sites available.
