We reveal that multicellular aggregates evolve because they perform chemotaxis more proficiently than single cells. Only once the environment changes too often, a unicellular state evolves which relies on mobile dispersal. Both methods avoid the intrusion associated with other through disturbance competitors, creating evolutionary bi-stability.
